Pretty good day

I've had a pretty good day. Started off the day with a dog castration. As I've said before, these are my favorites to do. Not because I particularly like to rid the world of dog testicles (actually, yes I do) but because of the surgery itself. When the testicles come out of the skin and fascia with a "pop" feel, it's lots of fun. Kinda like squeezing a grape out of its skin. 'Course, I also like to pop zits and pick scabs. To each their own...

Had a lot of variety today. Some mammary tumors in a dog that have thankfully not gotten to the point where they are large and necrotic. Science tidbit- if you spay your dog before her first heat cycle there is a 0% chance (ok, maybe 0.0003456%) of her getting mammary adenocarcinoma, versus no reduction in risk if she's spayed after her second heat cycle. I know people are saying, "But I want to breed her!" That's a whole 'nother different post, but if you know you're not going to breed your dog, just spay her early! You'll save yourself pain, heartbreak, and money later on.

I just saw a little dog who likes to eat squirrels, and she had HAIR caught in her teeth. Along with some of the nastiest tarter and bad breath I've seen in years, and that's saying a LOT. Yuck... don't let your dog eat squirrels or other small mammals.

Puppies are fun, but when it's 24 weeks old and growling at you when you walk in you know there will be trouble later...

Should have a good horse post later this week. Boy, it sure is cold here!!!! Stay warm ya'll!!!

LOL I once had a 9 week old Rottie puppy launch itself from under a chair, snarling like a beast, and attached itself to my hand. Yeah, never a good sign.

When the owner said they were considering getting rid of the dog, and I mentioned I might be willing to take the dog on as a project (was heavily into training at the time) the owner informed me she'd be happy to sell me the puppy for $300. I think she got the message when I couldn't stop laughing hysterically.

Thanks for a great read - been back checking old posts - brilliant...
Love the ob/gyn story

Nice to read tales from the profession - truth is stranger than fiction and sometimes hard to believe!

So, since you like to 'pop' testicles out, do you like abcesses? At our clinic, a good abcess gets everyone excited!

Hmmm. I have just reviewed my admittedly 12 year old systemic pathology notes from vet school :)
I found this statement:

"effect of number of
estrous cycles before neutering on risk of malignant mammary tumors:
if you spay a dog before its first heat cycle, risk of tumor is extremely low - .005%. after 1 cycle, risk is .08%. after 2nd cycle, risk is up to .26%. after the fourth cycle, it has no risk reduction effect. so spay early!"

So - is there newer information showing that spay after the first heat doesn't reduce the risk, or was my information always wrong? I would look into it personally right now but of course VIN is offline ;)

That's what I was taught in school (am an '07 model) but I may be misremembering... I do remember for sure that we were told that after 2nd heat cycle risk is the same as if never spayed at all. VIN will know for sure... I love VIN.
